Explore the museums
The best museums in Costa Rica are all clustered in downtown San José, and it's easy to walk or scoot from one to the other in a single day. Each museum represents a different cross-section of Tico life and you can explore them in roughly historical order.
You can start with the Jade Museum (Museo del Jade), which showcases the pre-Columbian art and artifacts made from jade and other materials.
Then, you can visit the National Museum (Museo Nacional), which is housed in a former military fortress and displays exhibits on the colonial and modern history of Costa Rica.
Finally, you can end your museum tour with the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo), which features works by local and international artists in various media.
Visit the markets
If you want to get a taste of the local flavors and products, you can head to one of the many markets in downtown San José. The most famous one is the Central Market (Mercado Central), which is a labyrinth of stalls selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to souvenirs and handicrafts. You can also find some delicious traditional dishes here, such as casado (rice, beans, salad, meat and plantains), gallo pinto (rice and beans) and chicharrones (fried pork rinds).
Another popular market is the Mercado Artesanal (in its new home south of Plaza de las Garantías Sociales), which is a great place to buy some unique gifts and souvenirs made by local artisans.
Go to the theater
One of the best preserved buildings in the country is the National Theater (Teatro Nacional). It has a wonderful cafeteria where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while admiring the beautiful architecture. The foyer is also a great place to take photos with your friends and family. A popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike is in front of the theater.
